King Rama IX 7th Series – Scott #1086 (1984)

Thailand #1086 (1984)
Thailand #1086 (1984)

The 7th Series of King Rama IX definitive stamps was printed by a number of different printers at different times between December 5, 1980, and June 19, 1987. The Scott catalogue lists the stamps in two separate groups — nine stamps comprising Scott #’s 932-940 issued 1980-1984 and 14 stamps numbered 1080-1093 which were released between 1984 and 1987. There are two types each of Scott #936-938 as the portraits were redrawn. Finally, five of the stamps in this series later received surcharges.

Several varieties of watermarks and perforations also exist. Scott has variety numbers for the different watermarks: 233 has Harrison & Sons London in script letters, 329 has zigzag lines, 368 has multiple letters JEZ, and 387 is a pattern consisting of squares and rectangles. Most of the relevant information is in the following list, presented by Scott number rather than by denomination as I’ve done for the previous sets of definitives (I don’t have printing quantities for most of these stamps):

The type differences for Scott #936-938 are that Type I featured an asymmetrical shape to the king’s mouth and small eye pupils while the redrawn Type II stamps show a symmetrical mouth and large eye pupils.

That is a lot of stamps for the 7th Series! I only have three in my collection at the moment (all were received on mail addressed to me). I think it’s time to work on the missing stamps….
